November 16-19

Hello Fourth Grade Families,
Things are going wonderfully in fourth grade math! Last week we finished up our order of operations and moved into some review. We reviewed 5 different standards which cover place value, comparing, rounding, factors and multiples, and patterns. I will be assessing these this week. For the homework tonight, since we are just reviewing and taking an assessment tomorrow, I want them to pick an IXL assignment that they feel they need to review (covering one of the topics that we have been reviewing). Once again, there is no chosen IXL for tonight (Monday), your student will pick a topic they feel they need to review. Also, tomorrow I will not be assigning homework during Thanksgiving break but I will be sending home a game that practices multiplication facts and I am encouraging them to share it with their families (the rules are attached). Thank you and have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

November 9-12

Hello 4th grade parents,

As first weeks go, I'd say this week was a success! Jumping into the year part way presents some challenges but your children have been great and willing to get down to work. We started the week by reviewing multiples and factors (and discussing the difference between the two). Then we jumped into learning about the order of operations. So far we have found that addition and multiplication are great because of commutative property and associative property. You can add or multiply in any order and get the same answer. Unfortunately that doesn't work the same with subtraction and division. We have worked on doing problems with addition and subtraction together, which must be done left to right (just like when you read), and multiplication and division together, which also go left to right. We just touched on problems with the four operations together and having to do multiplication and division first. We will continue working with order of operations this week.

This next week will also be doing some review. Some of the homework will IXL that your students have already done. If they finish it quickly, they can work on IXL K.1 Find two numbers based on sum and difference for a challenge. Thanks!

Have a wonderful week!

Holly Neal

P.S. I was very impressed by the math fact games your students found or created! We have been having fun playing them in class!

Here is a great list of games to practice math facts and you only need a deck of cards or dice!

Hello from Mrs. Neal!

Hello all!
I just wanted to shoot out another hello before school starts tomorrow. First off, I'm super grateful for the parents who are signing up to volunteer. I still have some times available for math facts, Mondays from 9:55-10:55, Tuesdays from 8:20-9:20, 9:55-10:55, and 11:15-12:15, and Wednesdays from 8:20-9:20 and 11:15-12:15. If you can volunteer during any of these times I would greatly appreciate it!

Also as a reminder, homework is listed for this week under the homework tab. Thanks and I look forward to teaching your kids!

Novemeber 2

Hello Parents!

The Halloween parade and party were great fun. All of the students looked great in their costumes. I especially want to thank all of the parents that helped by sending in snacks and for those that stopped by. I think that all of the students had a blast.

This week we will begin a new project. For the entry even our 4th and 5th graders will be walking off campus on Monday afternoon. We will be walking to view and discuss the old A&K construction yard that is located behind Taco Bell. It is a very short walk. We will not be ON the site, but will be in a position to view and discuss a few things that will directly relate to our new project. It looks like a chance of rain, of course, so send umbrellas and rain jackets with them. We won't be out long, 45 minutes at the longest!

In math, we will continue our work with factors and multiples. We will also continue our Math Fact practice. I have added a new page to the blog. It lists out all of the math fact practice standards on IXL. The standards are split up by grade. Students that need extra practice on Math Facts are encouraged to use the appropriate IXL standard (whether it is in their grade or not). For example, a student that is stuck on a particular addition or subtraction high number can use appropriate IXL standard listed.

As mentioned in last week's post please have your student check at home for the library book that is missing. It is called, "From Under Sun Mountain." This book really needs to be returned to the library as soon as possible. I will also remind the students in class this week.

Have a great week!
Mrs. Zimmerman
