Project Wrap Up

Happy Leap Day!

This week we will be wrapping up our current project. The students have worked very hard creating presentations to teach the other classes about conserving energy. We have 5 groups that will be presenting to K, 1st and 2nd graders.

The ultimate goal in the presentations is to implement these energy saving tips in our classrooms and around the school to help decrease the energy bill.

We also will begin preparations for our next project by collecting data on shadows. I will share more about this as we get closer to it.

Here's to another great week!

2/22-2/25

Hello!

We have a few items in the classroom leftover from the Christmas cookie activity that Mrs. Neal did in math class. If any of these items belong to you please let you student or I know so that they can go to the right home.

Are you my owner?
This week in projects we will continue our work on energy conservation as we turn our focus to what we can do as a school to conserve electricity and gas. The students will be researching tips that are relevant to the school environment and putting together presentations and posters for assigned classes.

Update: Please remember to send in the student enrollment confirmation form for next year. These need to be submitted by February 25th!

It is going to be a busy week for us! Hope everyone is enjoying this lovely weather today!

Coming up in projects..

Hello,

This week we will continue our work on conservation. The students will finish their group research on the efforts of New York, Los Angeles, and Fallon to conserve natural resources. The groups will share what they learned about the cities with their classmates. We will also have a guest speaker on Thursday who will share tips about conserving energy.

Valentine's Day will not be celebrated at school this year. As per school policy, since it does not fall on a school day we will not have a Valentine's Day party or any of the associated activities. Students will not be able to pass out Valentines during school.

Have a wonderful week!

January 25-28 math

Hello 4th grade families,

Last week in math we wrapped up our unit on multiplication and division by doing word problems. One thing we focused on for division word problems is interpreting remainders. For example, if there were 211 students going on a field trip and each bus could hold 20 students, how many buses would we need? Well the answer would be 10 with a remainder of 11 but we then realize that we can't have a remainder or that means some students will be left behind. Which means we actually need 11 buses, just one will only be partially filled.

We also worked on multi-step word problems using all four operations. I like to introduce word problems by using things to fill in for the numbers, mostly shapes and letters (variables). We then write out the equation to solve the problem using these variables. I do this first as a reminder to the students that with word problems, the first step is not to find the numbers, but to carefully read the problem and make a plan on how we can solve it. Once we have a game plan, then the numbers will be used to solve it. For example, if there are m boys and f girls in the fourth grade and each student brings s seed packets in for a science project, how many seed packets will we have? By not having any numbers in the problem, we can focus on what's really happening in the problem and how to solve it. The game plan for this problem would be to add the number of boys and girls together to find how many 4th graders there are, which would be m + f, and then we can multiply that sum by the number of seed packets each student will bring. So our equation would look like this: (m + f) x = ? We put parentheses to show that we want to do that part first. Once we have a game plan in place, then I will give them the numbers to fill in and solve.

As a reminder, since Valentine's day falls on the weekend, there will be no parties happening at school this year. We will not be passing out any valentines at any point either.

Thank you and have a wonderful week!

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow this weekend! I cannot believe it is already February.

Thank you to all of the family members that were able to attend our presentations on Thursday. The students had a blast sharing their work with you all.

This week we will begin our next project. Today we will learn about renewable and nonrenewable resources and conservation. Then we will look at how different cities strive to conserve resources and compare them.

Valentine's Day will not be celebrated at school this year. As per school policy, since it does not fall on a school day we will not have a Valentine's Day party or any of the associated activities. Students will not be able to pass out Valentines during school.

Have a lovely week,
