Reading update from Mrs. Windriver

4th Grade Reading:
We finished up sharing our presentations on fables, folktales and myths.
Students took notes on new Latin/Greek and will test the Thursday we come back. All students completed a Latin/Greek word creation. The middle schoolers that had me in the past will choose which LG creation will make it into the Hall of Fame.
We started learning more about Greek Mythology, which is always a high interest subject for 3rd and 4th graders. The stories are so interesting! We will be comparing and contrasting settings, themes and characters/traits.

Projects update from Ms. Williams

Hello parents!

I just wanted to give you an update on what we have done this week as well as what we will be doing next week. This week students have been working on building their maps of Nevada. They have been working hard, but we have run into some obstacles. Because we want your students to have the time to do their best work, both 4th grade classes have decided to postpone the map presentations (that were supposed to be the 22nd) to after Thanksgiving. Please don't tell your students until after school tomorrow, as I don't want them to slack off because they know they have more time. My hope is that they will be almost done with their maps tomorrow and then they will absolutely finish Monday and practice their presentations the rest of Monday and Tuesday.

We will have the presentations Tuesday the 29th from 2-3 without fail (as we need to move on to other topics of study). Please join us and see what your student has produced through all of their hard work!

Also, I have received some great ideas for methods of controlling the water bottles, but I am realizing my limitations, and so I wonder if any of you wonderful amazing parents would be willing and able to actually produce water bottle holders for our class? I can make sure you are reimbursed for any materials and if you keep track of your time, it will count towards your volunteer hours. If any of you are interested, please let me know!

I hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving! I know I am very thankful to have the privilege of teaching your children.

Reading update from Mrs. Windriver

Students started a literature study last week. They received two myths, fables or folktales and will have to compare and contrast the characters, story elements and theme and prepare a presentation for the class.
We had a Latin and Greek test on Thursday. Please ensure your child is studying outside of class if he/she is in need of extra study time. They received new LG on Monday.

October 3-6

Hello 4th grade families,
This week in math we began to dig into multiplication. We started by reviewing multiples and we learned how to find the least common multiple of two numbers. We then talked about factors and how they differ from multiples. We also learned how to find the greatest common factor of two numbers.

For projects, we are now researching more into our groups of Nevada settlers, including their lifestyles, conflicts and compromises, and contributions to Nevada. As a group, the students will be writing an essay and creating a model of their group of people. They will be asking to bring some supplies to school for their models. If it is something that you do not have or do not want to send to school, that is fine! I told the kids that if they had it and it was ok with their parents they could bring things for their models. I told them that they should not expect their families to buy or make anything for these models. We have plenty of supplies available at school.

Thank you and have a great week!

A note from Mrs. Windriver:

We've continued to review. Please remember to check your child's Edmodo.
Your child is welcome to read some of their book club book at home if they'd like. They can read it for their 20 minutes. On Thursday we had a Latin/Greek test. This can be studied at home as well as school.  They will receive new roots on Monday and will test the Thursday we get back from break.

September 26-29

Hello 4th grade families,
This week in math we wrapped up our review of the partial sum and partial difference method of addition and subtraction. Later in the year we will revisit addition and subtraction and they will learn the standard algorithm.
For projects, each student was assigned a group of people that settled into Nevada and shaped our history, including the hunter gatherers, Native American, miners, Mormons, and basque. For now they are creating timelines of major events for their group of people.
Thanks all and have a great week!

A note from Mrs. Windriver:
We are reviewing this week and next. We have covered a lot of vocabulary this quarter, so we are taking the time to recap.

There will be a Latin/Greek test on Thursday 10/6 (novem/9, dec/10, cent/100, mill/1,000).

Reading update from Mrs. Windriver

4th grade reading:
This week we learned about first and third person point of view.
Students also continued in their book clubs. On Monday I am sending home a sheet on how to access your child's Edmodo through your own access code.  Please be sure to check your child's work in here. Many students are struggling to turn in the quality of work I know they are capable of. Further, I always make comments on the work they've turned in (2s & 1s) so they know how to improve the following week. We even brainstormed key elements our Edmodo should contain, which is posted in the class. I am still seeing incomplete sentences, lowercase proper nouns, and no punctuation. Students who receive a 1 will go to study hall on Mondays to fix their work.

On Thursday we had a Latin/Greek test. Your child will take notes on new roots this Monday.

September 19-22

Hello 4th grade families,
This week in math we focused on preparing for subtraction. We reviewed subtracting with negative numbers and the combos to make 10, 100, and 1,000. We really dug in deep so that when we begin our subtraction, it is a breeze!
For projects this week we have begun a new one. We will be learning about the early settlers of Nevada. We started the project out by reviewing the Nevada state symbols and motto. We also reviewed what a timeline is and as a TRIBES activity created our own personal timelines. Then we moved into talking about who the early settlers of Nevada would be by checking out a Nevada timeline. We also got an awesome visit from Fred, a desert tortoise! Thanks again to the Pirkle family for letting us meet and learn all about Fred!

We learned about the story plot: exposition, climax and resolution. We also continued identifying protagonist and antagonist.

There will be a Latin/Greek test 9/22 on quint/penta, hex, sept, oct.

September 12-15

Hello 4th grade families,
Another great week in 4th grade! This week in math we wrapped up our work on rounding and began reviewing addition strategies, focusing on partial sum. Here is the video on partial sums for review: https://youtu.be/rPqV5ipYWQY

For projects we wrapped up our Animal and Plant project with a fun interactive presentation. The fifth and sixth graders came to check it out and it went really well! If you want to view your student's project as well they can show you in Google classroom (they will have to log into their google account, let me know if you need help with this). Here are some pictures from the fun:

A last reminder, tomorrow is picture day! Have a wonderful week!
