August 22nd-25th

Hello 4th grade families,
Another awesome week at Oasis is in the books! We had a lot of fun this week and did a lot of learning. For math this week we focused on our numbers to 100,000, including different forms (standard form, expanded form, word form, etc). We also reviewed rounding and can now round numbers up to 100,000 and we reviewed comparing and ordering numbers. We will continue working with place value and number sense this week.

Our Animal and Plant project seems to be a hit! We learned about plant structures and their functions. Then we put them to a test. We placed celery and carnations in water with food coloring (some we split in half and place in two different colors) and let them sit for a couple days. We then observed that the plants started to change colors! We talked about the xylem and phloem and how they work inside plants. Then we dissected! First we cut the celery and we could actually see the xylem and poem dyed by the food coloring. Then we cut into the flowers, getting a closer look at the plant structures. As you can see, it was pretty fun!

Thanks and have a great week!

1st week of school

Hello 4th grade families!
Well this year is off to a fantastic start! We had a great week, reviewing all of our rules and procedures. It really helps that I have had all of these students for multiple years. We dug deep into our TRIBES agreements, doing lots of activities to help build our classroom community. And we even got started on our new project with a pretty neat entry event, a frog dissection!

A big thank you to everyone who came to back to school night! If you missed it here are a few important things:

  • please make sure to send home those important pages from the student handbook ASAP
  • If you want the ACT Aspire scores, you have to come in and get them from Mrs. Mackedon.
  • The homework this year will be listed in two places. The first is on the tab labeled homework on this blog and the second is on your child's google calendar.

I also sent out an e-mail recently about open volunteer positions. Please let me know if you can help out in our classroom! And as always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Thanks and have a great week!

Summer Math Project

Hello all!
Summer has flown by in a blink of the eye! My plan was to have three parts to the summer math project but as we are so near the end of summer, I think 2 parts will be plenty! Hopefully there are some fabulous restaurant plans and scrumptious menus out there and they should be shared. And they will be! Your kids can share their summer math projects on Saturday, August 13th at 10:00 at Venturacci Park. They can choose how they want to present it, either by creating a poster, a book, a flyer, however they want. I will also bring some treats! If you can, please shoot me an e-mail letting me know if your student plans on participating in the summer math project presentations so I can have an idea of how many people to plan for. Also, feel free to bring family and friends to hear the presentations, it should be fun!
