Summer Homework and Field Day Pictu

I'm including summer reading and math information here so you don't have to scroll to the bottom of all the pictures to find this information.

Math 1st grade - 8th grade:
Your child will bring home a math facts packet to be completed and returned to school on the first day of school. Remember, this is mandatory and counts as 10% of your child's first quarter grade.

Reading 3rd grade - 8th grade plus 10th grade:
Your child will be required to read a minimum of 1 book of their choice over the summer and fill out a brief book review.  We ask that you help your child pick an appropriate book that is not too easy nor too difficult.  We hope that your children will read more than 1 book and review all the books they read.  We also hope that parents will review the books being reading.  In the fall we will publish our very own "Oasis Good Reads" book review on the school website.

If your child chooses a book and you are not sure if it is too easy or too hard you can check the reading level here.  http://arbookfinder.com

Reading update with Mrs. Luyt 5/21-5/24/18

Enjoy your long weekend and Happy Memorial Day! We only have 7 more days of school left. This year has flown by!

Reading:  Last week, students had their final scholastic assignment while I reassessed their final reading levels for the year. Students also received their final spelling lists of high-frequency spelling words. The final spelling test will be on 5/31/18. Next week, students will have assignments that cover some of the standards we have covered this year. I will be finishing up with assessments of reading levels.

We started a boys verses girls point system for the last two weeks that I have the 4th graders. The boys all sit at tables together, as do the girls. They earn a point for behavior and the group that has the most points on 5/31/18, will be getting a special treat and will have lunch with me on Thursday. They are all very excited about this and have been doing a great job!

Homework: Read for 20 minutes a day. Study spelling lists for test on 5/31/18.

Math update with Mrs. Neal

Hello all!
Testing is going well. Tomorrow the 4th graders will be taking part 1 of the Smarter Balanced math test and Tuesday will be part 2. Then the following Monday and Tuesday they will take part 1 and part 2 of the ELA test. There are still plenty of openings in the sign ups for snacks so if you didn't get a chance please check it out: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4ca9ae2ba2f58-testing2
Also as a reminder, there is no homework during testing, so the math fact logs will not be checked, however it is not a bad idea to continue practicing math facts to keep the habit up.
Thanks and have a great week!
Holly Neal

April!

Energy!
This month we continued our studies about energy.  We had fun exploring kinetic and potential energy with Hot Wheels tracks and cars.  We learned that as we increased our potential energy we also increased our kinetic energy.  We observed this by taking measurements of how far our cars would travel with ramps at different heights.  We also discovered that energy is transferred in a collision.  We conducted similar experiments and found that we could make another car roll forward by colliding with it.  We found that as we increased our potential and kinetic energy, we transferred more kinetic energy.
We then moved on to study how energy travels from place to place.  It is with waves!!!  We learned about the different kinds of waves that transfer energy: Heat, light, sound, water, and electrical currents.  We made string musical instruments with rubber bands.  First, we explored different containers and how it affected the sound that was produced. Then, they chose a container and had to create 3 different pitches with their instrument.  If was fun to watch as they learned the tighter the string, which would vibrate faster, would create a higher pitch.  Or they could choose a thicker rubber band, which would vibrate slower, and create a lower pitch.  There were many options for them to try and explore.  Of course we had to end with a classroom performance!

We are now moving on to Earth Science and studying erosion.  The kids have some fun stories to share about their personal experiences with erosion.  We have learned about how the Grand Canyon was created. and will be creating our own demonstrations with erosion.  We received a grant to purchase stream table, so this will make our demonstrations even more realistic!  We can't wait to try it out.

I never shared these pictures of when Mrs. Morar came and drew designs on the kids hands during art.  They thought it was so fun!  Thank you for sharing your talents with us, Mrs. Morar!

Earthquake!

For our last project we studied the impact the Earth's natural processes has on humans.  We researched how engineers build earthquake resistant structures.  We used the engineering method to design and create our own earthquake resistant structures.  The students were constrained to only 10 items and only had one day of projects to build it.  We had fun as our structures experienced an earthquake!
