4th grade reading:
This week we learned about first and third person point of view.
Students also continued in their book clubs. On Monday I am sending home a sheet on how to access your child's Edmodo through your own access code. Please be sure to check your child's work in here. Many students are struggling to turn in the quality of work I know they are capable of. Further, I always make comments on the work they've turned in (2s & 1s) so they know how to improve the following week. We even brainstormed key elements our Edmodo should contain, which is posted in the class. I am still seeing incomplete sentences, lowercase proper nouns, and no punctuation. Students who receive a 1 will go to study hall on Mondays to fix their work.
On Thursday we had a Latin/Greek test. Your child will take notes on new roots this Monday.

September 19-22
Hello 4th grade families,
This week in math we focused on preparing for subtraction. We reviewed subtracting with negative numbers and the combos to make 10, 100, and 1,000. We really dug in deep so that when we begin our subtraction, it is a breeze!
For projects this week we have begun a new one. We will be learning about the early settlers of Nevada. We started the project out by reviewing the Nevada state symbols and motto. We also reviewed what a timeline is and as a TRIBES activity created our own personal timelines. Then we moved into talking about who the early settlers of Nevada would be by checking out a Nevada timeline. We also got an awesome visit from Fred, a desert tortoise! Thanks again to the Pirkle family for letting us meet and learn all about Fred!

September 12-15
Hello 4th grade families,
Another great week in 4th grade! This week in math we wrapped up our work on rounding and began reviewing addition strategies, focusing on partial sum. Here is the video on partial sums for review: https://youtu.be/rPqV5ipYWQY
For projects we wrapped up our Animal and Plant project with a fun interactive presentation. The fifth and sixth graders came to check it out and it went really well! If you want to view your student's project as well they can show you in Google classroom (they will have to log into their google account, let me know if you need help with this). Here are some pictures from the fun:

A note about reading from Mrs. Windriver
4th Grade Reading:
We learned about theme this week. I read a couple of different stories: The Most Magnificent Thing and Ish and the students determined the themes that can be found in the stories.
We also continued to work in our book clubs and in Edmodo. If you haven't already, please check out your child's Edmodo page.
We had our first Latin and Greek test. Your child brought these home on Thursday.
September 5-8
Hello 4th grade families,
This week in math we began rounding. We first reviewed the rounding that we learned last year in third grade, rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. Then we took that knowledge and extended it into rounding to the nearest 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000. We will continue with rounding this week.
For projects, we are digging deep into our research on our animals. The students are working in pairs and researching a specific animal's senses and how it uses it senses to react to the world around it. We then taking that information and creating an interactive slide show. We will be wrapping up our project this next week and sharing it with our 5th and 6th grade friends.
I am still in search of a math fact volunteer for Wednesdays from 11:15-12:15. If you are available at the time, I could really use you!
Thanks and have a wonderful week!

Reading update from Mrs. Windriver
We are in the swing of things during our 4th grade reading block. It's been great to have your children again. This past week we started our reading groups and took notes on our first set of Latin/Greek roots. As a reminder, your child will not have spelling with me this year - this will occur in Mrs. Mori's class.
The students got started in Edmodo this past week as well. This is the 2nd year for your kiddo so more often than not, they'll be able to answer any Edmodo questions you may have. Additionally, there is an Edmodo tab on my blog with information. A couple of quick points, however: You will never need the group code. If you are being asked for it, you're not logging in to the correct spot. You must log in by clicking the green "Login" button on the top right-hand side of the main page. There is a parent code on your child's Edmodo page if you'd like to follow their assignments/grades etc.
If you're interested in how your child is doing with their reading assignments, please check their Edmodo page as it's all there.
We have been learning about character traits, context clues and inference. These are all elements we use in reading throughout the year, whether we are reading fiction or non-fiction.
**Please ensure your child is reading 20 minutes each night. This is important to your child's reading success. This is the only homework they have from me (Edmodo is done at school).
