December 7-10
This week in math we started out all about subtraction. The expectation in fourth grade is that students can use the standard algorithm for addition and subtraction for numbers up to 1,000,000. We reviewed partial difference and then worked with using the standard algorithm. We took an assessment on adding and subtracting using the standard algorithm this week as well. This week we are working on multiplication as comparison, saying that 6x4 is 6 times as many as 4. We are also working on word problems using this idea. The homework for this week will be:
Monday- Worksheet (there are no IXL assignments for this standard)
Tuesday-Thursday- No homework (we will be doing assessments and fun things for Christmas but it would be a good idea to practice math facts still!)
For our Christmas activity we will be making cookies! I will be making it a math activity with division and fractions but it will still be a blast! Keeping this in mind, I will be in need of some items that I am hoping I can borrow from some of you. Items I am hoping we can use this week: Baking pans (3), cookie cutters (Christmas themed if you have them), rolling pins (I only have one so 3 or 4 would be great), any sprinkles, frosting or other cookies decorating items that are not being used in your house. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any of these things we can use or just send them with your students. We will need this items by Wednesday but feel free to send things in Tuesday as well.
Thanks and have a wonderful week! Happy Holidays!

November 30 - December 3
It's been another wonderful week here in math! This week was a week of reviewing addition and subtraction. We started reviewing partial sum and partial difference but then dug deep into the standard algorithm for each. I like to show each method side by side so the students can see the two methods and how they are very similar and how the numbers are doing the same thing, we are just writing it in different ways.
I am going to be making a change in homework for Thursdays. Instead of giving an IXL assignment, I want the weekend focus to be practicing math facts. There is a page on this blog that is dedicated to math facts with websites and games (I'll be adding more). I will also send home new games on Thursdays as much as possible. My goal is that instead of worrying about completing an IXL assignment, your student will take that time to practice their math facts. I feel that in the long run, math fact practice will be more beneficial for the students.
The homework for this week will be:
Monday- IXL C.5 Choose numbers with a particular difference
Tuesday- IXL F.8 Mentally add and subtract numbers ending in zeros
Wednesday- IXL D.2 Multiplication facts up to 12: Find the missing factor
Thursday- Math fact practice
Thank you and have a fantastic week!

November 16-19
Things are going wonderfully in fourth grade math! Last week we finished up our order of operations and moved into some review. We reviewed 5 different standards which cover place value, comparing, rounding, factors and multiples, and patterns. I will be assessing these this week. For the homework tonight, since we are just reviewing and taking an assessment tomorrow, I want them to pick an IXL assignment that they feel they need to review (covering one of the topics that we have been reviewing). Once again, there is no chosen IXL for tonight (Monday), your student will pick a topic they feel they need to review. Also, tomorrow I will not be assigning homework during Thanksgiving break but I will be sending home a game that practices multiplication facts and I am encouraging them to share it with their families (the rules are attached). Thank you and have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

November 9-12
As first weeks go, I'd say this week was a success! Jumping into the year part way presents some challenges but your children have been great and willing to get down to work. We started the week by reviewing multiples and factors (and discussing the difference between the two). Then we jumped into learning about the order of operations. So far we have found that addition and multiplication are great because of commutative property and associative property. You can add or multiply in any order and get the same answer. Unfortunately that doesn't work the same with subtraction and division. We have worked on doing problems with addition and subtraction together, which must be done left to right (just like when you read), and multiplication and division together, which also go left to right. We just touched on problems with the four operations together and having to do multiplication and division first. We will continue working with order of operations this week.
This next week will also be doing some review. Some of the homework will IXL that your students have already done. If they finish it quickly, they can work on IXL K.1 Find two numbers based on sum and difference for a challenge. Thanks!
Have a wonderful week!
Holly Neal
P.S. I was very impressed by the math fact games your students found or created! We have been having fun playing them in class!

Hello from Mrs. Neal!
I just wanted to shoot out another hello before school starts tomorrow. First off, I'm super grateful for the parents who are signing up to volunteer. I still have some times available for math facts, Mondays from 9:55-10:55, Tuesdays from 8:20-9:20, 9:55-10:55, and 11:15-12:15, and Wednesdays from 8:20-9:20 and 11:15-12:15. If you can volunteer during any of these times I would greatly appreciate it!
Also as a reminder, homework is listed for this week under the homework tab. Thanks and I look forward to teaching your kids!

Novemeber 2
The Halloween parade and party were great fun. All of the students looked great in their costumes. I especially want to thank all of the parents that helped by sending in snacks and for those that stopped by. I think that all of the students had a blast.
This week we will begin a new project. For the entry even our 4th and 5th graders will be walking off campus on Monday afternoon. We will be walking to view and discuss the old A&K construction yard that is located behind Taco Bell. It is a very short walk. We will not be ON the site, but will be in a position to view and discuss a few things that will directly relate to our new project. It looks like a chance of rain, of course, so send umbrellas and rain jackets with them. We won't be out long, 45 minutes at the longest!
In math, we will continue our work with factors and multiples. We will also continue our Math Fact practice. I have added a new page to the blog. It lists out all of the math fact practice standards on IXL. The standards are split up by grade. Students that need extra practice on Math Facts are encouraged to use the appropriate IXL standard (whether it is in their grade or not). For example, a student that is stuck on a particular addition or subtraction high number can use appropriate IXL standard listed.
As mentioned in last week's post please have your student check at home for the library book that is missing. It is called, "From Under Sun Mountain." This book really needs to be returned to the library as soon as possible. I will also remind the students in class this week.
Have a great week!

Happy Halloween!
I am looking for a missing library book that I brought in for one of our projects. It is called,"From Under Sun Mountain." We have checked all cubbies and shelves here at school. I would appreciate it if you could have your students check at home also.
This week students are continuing work on the Economic lessons began last week.
Thursday the school will celebrate Halloween.
Please remember the following information about costumes:
- Kids can wear Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, October 29.
- No scary or bloody masks are allowed and all masks must be removed during class time.
- Costumes must cover as much skin as school uniforms do. Parents will be called to bring a school uniform if costumes violate the dress code.
Our Halloween Party will be at 2:30. Please contact Racquel if you have specific party questions.
Have a great week and Happy Halloween!

Hello! Hello!
Behavior Charts:
Due to some issues of keeping all students on task I will be implementing new clip charts in my room. Having the visual reminder within the room should help with these concerns more effectively than Class Dojo.
Just a quick overview:
There are five levels. The middle level is the daily starting point. Students will then be directed to move their clip up or down based on their actions in class. I will be watching for students to be on task, demonstrating the Tribes agreements, and other actions.
If a student moves their clip down more than one then I will contact parents via email. Additional emails may be sent if a student's behavior warrants it.
I have a clip chart that will be used for 3rd and 5th grade as well.
Math: In math this week, we will continue work with addition and subtraction using partial sums/differences and standard algorithm to solve. We will also add in review of previous standards to prepare for the quiz on Thursday.
Projects:
In projects, students will be working on the Nevada maps. We will be using the Star Board to trace Nevada onto our tag board and begin work on the maps.
Looking forward to another great week,
Mrs. Zimmerman

Week of September 14
Math-
This week in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math classes we will be taking a break on introducing new information to review all previous concepts. Over the weekend Ms. Williams and I met with Mr. Lewis to discuss our progress so far and fine tune our plans for implementing Math Facts in the classroom.
Ms. Williams and I decided that it would benefit the most students to review our concepts covered so far to ensure that all students completely understand the material before we continue.
In 3rd grade this means reviewing place value, rounding, number forms, partial sum and partial difference.
In 4th grade we will be stepping back to review partial sum and partial difference to better understand how it applies to addition and subtraction in the standard algorithm. This should be review from last year. By the end of the week students will be able to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems using both methods.
In 5th grade we will be reviewing partial products in order to better understand the process behind multiplication in the standard algorithm. By the end of the week students will be able to answer multiplication problems using both methods.
After talking to Mr. Lewis, I have also decided to postpone the hard copy requirement. Students need to complete work on paper as necessary to complete problems on IXL but it does not need to be turned in. I will let you know if or when this changes during the year.
Projects-
In projects students will continue progress on their Who Would Move to Nevada? research. After notes are approved students will begin work on their essay rough drafts which are the summation of their group's research. Students will also begin producing their timeline items.
Looking forward to another great week,
Mrs. Zimmerman

Hello! Hello!
Big things are happening this week! In Math the fourth graders will be having their first quiz. We will spend the week reviewing our previous concepts then have our quiz on Thursday. Students will also complete their group plan and begin research after it is approved for their first Social Studies project.
I have a quick side note on homework. It is very important for students to complete homework assignments. I use the information provided from these assignments to determine areas that students need additional help with during class time. I have several students that have not completed any homework. This is not good. Students will still be expected to complete these sections on IXL.
Beginning next week, students that do not complete homework will be sent to study hall. They will continue to attend study hall until all missing homework is complete. I do not wish to send students to study hall. Please help remind your students to complete their homework. All homework information is available here on the blog on the homework page.
One update to my homework policy is how I will be grading it. I will grade homework (specifically IXL) on a weekly basis. Students should have all assignments complete by Fridays at 4:00 p.m. This will provide me with enough time to grade all students' work. This also helps students, as there may be a school night that is very busy. Please do not use this policy as a reason to put off homework till Friday. A lot of times the information covered in class builds upon one another making it very important that students practice one topic before moving on to the next day's topic.
Have a great week!
