Coming Up This Week

Hello!

This week we will continue making observations of our terrariums. We will also be creating a pamphlet as a class to share on Thursday with parents.

As mentioned last week...
On Thursday January 28th at 2:15,  parents are invited to come in to view presentations. Students will present the pamphlet and share their products displayed around the room with parents.

Valentine's Day will not be celebrated at school this year. As per school policy, since it does not fall on a school day we will not have a Valentine's Day party or any of the associated activities. Students will not be able to pass out Valentines during school.

Have a wonderful week!

Terrariums are growing!

Hello Parents!

The terrariums are growing wonderfully! It was so exciting to see how much the plants grew over the long weekend. We are continuing our daily observations of the terrariums. On Tuesday we began creating Water Cycles using Google Drawings. It is a great opportunity for students to get creative using a digital tool. Today we will finish the water cycles and graph the distribution of the world's water sources. Then we will look at the flow of matter in an ecosystem. Thursday we will begin the final product in this project. We will be creating a pamphlet as a class that contains helpful tips for gardening in Nevada.

Two Big Items:

Next Thursday January 28th at 2:15,  parents are invited to come in to view presentations. Students will present the pamphlet and share their products displayed around the room with parents.

Valentine's Day will not be celebrated at school this year. As per school policy, since it does not fall on a school day we will not have a Valentine's Day party or any of the associated activities. Students will not be able to pass out Valentines during school.

Have a great day!

January 11-14

Hello 4th grade families!
I hope everyone had a great 4 day weekend! Last week in math we dug deep into division. If you refer to the blog post from last week you can find the videos I posted to help with the different strategies we are learning. We have been working on using our knowledge in other areas of math such as place value and area to help us with our division. We will continue working on multiplication and division in this short week.
Thank you!

Projects: Terrariums Complete!

Hello Again!

Monday and Tuesday were very busy days in projects this week. We built our terrariums and reviewed our vocabulary, including ecosystems and the four spheres of the Earth.

Thank you to everyone that sent in materials to be used in building our terrariums!

Now that the terrariums are built the students will be making daily observations on their plant growth and any changes within their terrariums. Many students enjoyed putting night crawlers in the terrariums and have even named them!

Looking forward to the rest of our week as we learn about photosynthesis, the water cycle, and the distribution of water on Earth.

Have a great day,

Mrs. Zimmerman

Jan 4th-7th

Hello 4th Grade Families!
This last week in math was all about multiplication. As you may have noticed, I posted some videos last week. These were two of the strategies that we have learned for multiply multi-digit numbers. The first is the area model. With the area model we use our knowledge of area combined with our knowledge of place value to help us multiply these larger numbers. The second is partial product. In this strategy we take each number and break it down by place value and multiply each place one step at a time. Once we get the products for each step, we can then combine all these 'partial products' to get our total product. If you haven't watched these videos they are a great resource not only for you to see what your students are learning but they are good for your students to watch when they are having trouble with homework and need a review. This week we are focusing on division and using the same strategies, just for division. Here are some videos for those:
First we started by using base ten blocks to give us a hands on understanding of division:

Next we'll be using the area model:

We'll also be learning partial quotient:

Hopefully these videos will help you better understand what your student is learning in class. And as always, if you have any questions feel free to ask me!

As for the report cards, please contact me if you have any questions on those. Since I was not here for the first quarter, if you are interested in meeting with me to discuss your student's progress in math I would love to schedule a meeting. I also have had some questions about assessments and when they would be sent home. I actually keep most everything to help guide my instruction as well as for evidence during conferences. But if you are interested in seeing any assessments I have given so far just let me know and you can either stop by school and check them out or I can make copies of them and send them home.

Thanks and have a wonderful week!

4th grade math videos

Hello all!
This week 4th grade math as been working on multiplication with larger numbers. We have focused mostly on two strategies which may be new to you, which are the area model and partial product. Since these are new I have found some videos to help you see how these strategies work. If you have any questions feel free to contact me!

Projects Update

Hello Parents!

I hope everyone had great Winter Break. As we start our 3rd quarter, we will continue our work in science that we began before break. Today in class, we started learning our new vocabulary for the science topics being learned in this project.

Our project will have several steps to it. The main part will be creating a terrarium. The students will each build their own terrarium (the goal is to do this next Monday, January 11).

I sent out a supply list via email for the terrariums over the Winter Break. Thank you to everyone that has already sent supplies in.

We are still in need of the remaining items:

Each student needs a 2 liter bottle with the lid
pebbles (even from your flower bed!)
Spanish moss

Thanks so much for your help, the bottles cannot be bought online, and the pebbles are free! That will enable us to order Spanish moss if needed.
